Hair FAQ

Brand new updated hair FAQ! :)

How do you keep your hair so healthy even after dying it so many times?
-I have a full blog post on all my secrets that can be found here

What products do you use to keep the color?
-I actually have previously made a post on this which can be found here. When it comes to your shampoo and conditioner it must be sulfate and paraben free. Otherwise, you are just stripping the color right out. Invest in good dry shampoo in between washes. This will sound strange, but I also wash my hair upside down. That way the color that is being washed out will flow down the rest of my hair and slightly deposit more color as it washes out.

What color dye to you use?
I use only Manic Panic products. Right now, I am using most of their purple options. I have used Ultra Violet which is more of a blueish purple. It makes a very beautiful pastel, but plan on recoloring once a week. It fades into a true lavender. I really love Mystic Heather and it is more of a pinkish purple. It will fade into a pastel pinkish color and holds well. I also have used Electric Amethyst which is a more muted purple. I don't normally like the initial color once I color it, but it fades to a beautiful iridescent  purple. It does seem to fade fast as well. I love to add in a touch of Cotton Candy Pink to all of my purple mixtures. Your natural hair has many dimensions to it and you want to replicate that even with candy colored hair.

How do you bleach your hair? Do you do it yourself?
-I go to a salon to have any bleaching done. I highly recommend this. I did attempt to bleach my hair once and it did not go so well. I don't even do my roots myself. Bleach is very harsh and it is easy for things to go wrong. I promise it is worth the extra money to have a professional handle that part.

How do you deal with breakage?
-I make sure to not use hot tools too much and always do hair masks. If you hair is brittle, you may need to opt for a shorter hair do and let it heal. I have actually been through this process before I went into candy colors. Always be gentle with your ends.

What toner do you use to get it silver?
-The silver is actually a complete accident. Every once in a while I get lucky and it fades to this. I actually do not use a toner to achieve it.

How often do you dye your hair? Do you do it yourself?
-I do all of the coloring myself. I normally color my hair every 2-4 weeks.

What extensions are your favorite?
-I love my Foxy Locks extensions. I plan on getting new ones once I change my hair color again. I get the superior 20" 230g extensions in platinum blonde and then color them myself.

Where do you get your hair dye?
-You can get Manic Panic from Sally's or online from their website.

How often do you wash your hair?
-I try to wash my hair only once a week. It does vary depending on how much product is in my hair or what not. The longer I can go without washing, the better.

How do you get the coconut oil out of your hair without leaving it greasy?
-Remember, with coconut oil a little goes a long way. I used to leave mine in overnight then wash it a few times in the shower to get it all out. If my hair was still a little greasy, I just put it up in a bun or a slicked back ponytail to hide it.

What can I do to make my hair less oily?
-Dry shampoo or baby powder really helped me when my hair was super oily.

How do you curl your hair? How do you get it too hold the curl?
-I actually have a tutorial which can be found here. I recommend a light hairspray like a 3 on a scale to 5. Use a bunch but brush it out.

What is your natural color?
-I am naturally a dark brunette.

What was the bleach process like to go lavender? How many times did you bleach it?
-Before I went lavender I was actually blue, if you are going from your natural color then your experience will be completely different. I had to bleach my hair 3 or 4 times in order to get the blue out. Once I got the left over color to a light enough color, I had it toned. You must have a platinum blonde to achieve lavender. My process was long and there were a lot of terrible hair moments where I didn't want to leave the house. You must understand going into it that it won't happen in one sitting. It takes time and a good understanding of your hair, don't push your hair past its breaking point!

Is Manic Panic harmful to your hair?
-No, Manic Panic will condition your hair. Also, since I normally go pastel I add in conditioner to dilute the color. However, make sure not to add too much because it tends to get too runny and will create a patchy dye job.

What do you use to get your curls?
-I currently use a 1 inch curling wand. It is absolutely amazing and achieves the perfect curl. Make sure to use the glove though so you don't get burned. I also use a very light hairspray, like a 3 on a scale to 5. Then I just brush it out.
